The Clark family joined the SBTA late last year and have been fighting an eviction from Fannie Mae for almost two years. They’ve grown up in Springfield and are deeply involved in the community. When they bought their home, they were fixed into 2 high interest, adjustable rate mortgages at the last minute by the mortgage broker (this was a common practice of predatory lending). They were forced to refinance into an inflated bubble loan. Christine is a CNA at Bay State hospital and has been for more than 11 years. Howard is a fencer and landscaper. In 2007 Christine was hit in a major car accident and left with 2 years of physical therapy, and an inability to work for some time causing them to fall behind on their mortgage. Citi-Mortgage and Fannie Mae moved to foreclose in 2011 without any notice of foreclosure auction. Christine is now back to work as a CNA and the family has consistent income. They’ve repeatedly offered to pay rent to Fannie Mae, and recently were pre-approved for a loan with Boston Community Capital to repurchase their home at the current market value.
There is no reason to evict the Clark family – Fannie Mae could stop the eviction and get a better deal for taxpayers by simply negotiating a deal through BCC!

Why Fannie & Freddie should elicit your outrage and why we’ve had a campaign against Fannie/Freddie for more than a year:
  • Fannie & Freddie were bailed out with $180 billion in taxpayer bailouts – they haven’t paid it back. They are taxpayer owned, but big bank controlled! That is unacceptable! Fannie & Freddie should be putting people and the taxpayer before profit and speculation!
  • Fannie & Freddie refuse to do loan modifications with principal reduction, even though their own internal reports show that it would be better for taxpayer investors, it would keep families in their homes and it would be good for the whole economy!
  • After refusing loan modifications, Fannie & Freddie refuse to accept rent, evict and sit on vacant homes.
  • Now Fannie & Freddie are BULK selling thousands of properties to hedge funds, investors and the same people who created the crisis in the first place at steep discounts!
